Penn State Safe & Aware

Alcohol Education and Intervention Programs

All students who violate the University’s alcohol policy will be required to complete an alcohol education and intervention program. Students are also responsible for all fees associated with the program.

Commonwealth Campuses:

Programs vary by campus. The Student Conduct staff at your campus will give you specific instructions about the program that you need to complete if you have a violation. Some campuses require an educational program when a student has an alcohol-related emergency department visit at their local hospital.

University Park Campus:

The alcohol education and intervention program at the University Park campus is called BASICS, which stands for Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. Students who are required to complete BASICS will pay a $250.00 fee.

BASICS is required for all University Park students who have a first-time violation for underage drinking, public drunkenness, or DUI.

Learn more about the BASICS program on the Health Promotion and Wellness website.
